Venom: Deathtrap - The Vault

(Art by Ron Lim, Jim Sanders and Fred Fredricks)

Venom stages a breakout from within the supervillain prison known as The Vault but has to contend with both the Avengers and the Freedom Force.

This is a pretty straightforward self-contained story in which a diverse group of supervillains go toe-to-toe with two teams of superheroes (although 'heroes' can only loosely be applied to the Freedom Force, who used to be the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants).  It's perfectly enjoyable in that regard and leads to some versus moments that you're unlikely to see elsewhere like Venom against Rhino or Captain America against Electro.

However, beyond various heroes fighting various villains there's not much to this book.  There's a vague subplot of the warden of The Vault being a bit sadistic and murderous towards supervillains (like Amadeus Arkham in the DC Universe) but it's never really given the time and commitment to make it particularly significant.
