Star Wars: Rebel Heist

(Art by Marco Castiello and Dan Parsons)

Set between 'A New Hope' and 'The Empire Strikes Back' this book sees the heroes of the Rebellion (Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie) being paired with Rebel recruits to undertake a secret mission.

This timeframe is always problematic for me since there's very little real character development that can happen before Episode V, so the main Star Wars characters usually just play out the cliche roles defined by their appearance in Episode IV.  Here, however, Kindt takes an interesting new approach to these overly familiar characters by telling their stories through the eyes of others.  I did enjoy the varied natures of the Point-Of-View characters too, including as they do a rookie Rebel, a jaded undercover agent, a defecting Stormtrooper and an Imperial spy.

That which lets this book down, however, is twofold.  The first is simply the massive anti-climax of what the point of the mission is.  Don't get me wrong, it was nice to have a nod to 'The Empire Strikes Back', but this one felt pretty underwhelming.  The second problem stems from the fact that each of the POV characters doubts the Rebel heroes they're observing but, in every case, we the readers already know they're mistaken and this takes something away from the overall satisfaction of the book.
