Nightmare Academy: Charlie's Monsters

Nightmare Academy book one.  This book is the story of Charlie Benjamin, a boy who finds that he has an unusually strong ability to call forth monsters from another reality known as the Nether.  As he begins training his abilities at the Nightmare Academy Charlie finds himself the subject of the attention of one of the most powerful creatures of the Nether.

This book basically reads as a mix of Harry Potter and 'Men In Black' and the parallels aren't too heavily veiled either.  Sadly, however, the author doesn't seem to have the ironic wit seen in 'Men In Black' and certainly lacks the flair and subtlety of J. K. Rowling.

There is a reasonable story buried in this book, but it's too bogged down by awkward prose and over-familiar ideas.  Perhaps if I was the target audience (ie a younger reader) then I'd get more from the book than I did, but you can rest assured that this book won't have the adult appeal of the truly great children's fantasies.
