Bone: Ghost Circles

Book seven.  As the Lord of Locusts attempts to break free, Fone, Phoney, Smiley, Gran'ma Ben and Thorn attempt to flee through the bubbles of sinister unreality known as ghost circles.

Cards on the table; this was the first 'Bone' book I've ever read.  I'd heard of the series before but not read any of it until this book came into my hands.  I'm well aware that book seven is not the best place to start with any series, but I've done similar things in the past and still managed to appreciate the book on its own merits.

Unfortunately, I just didn't get this book, or the series it represents.  I don't understand why the main characters are so cartoonish when everyone and everything around them is not.  I didn't get why these weird bone creatures living in a fantasy world knew what 'Moby Dick' was.  And I got no sense of the plot or tone of the series as a whole.  Certainly this book is not a self-contained story and very little really happens throughout, serving merely to move the main character from one place that I knew nothing about towards another place which I also knew nothing about.

I'm well aware that this is a popular and highly acclaimed graphic novel series, but from reading this one book alone it has left me with absolutely no interest to seek out any more of these books.
